The establishment of a Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) is to provide government departments as well as public and private organizations with an information infrastructure to share spatial data, supporting various smart city applications, and support the Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong of the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau.

With location as the common language, various spatial data owning by government departments and public organizations can be shared, standardized and opened up with the community via a map-based digital infrastructure. Through effective sharing of spatial data on the CSDI, it is our target to minimize the possible duplication of efforts among departments and public organizations in maintaining and processing data, thereby supporting decision-making and enhancing the efficiency of work.

The CSDI should be able to:

• Facilitate and support the development of a dynamic and flexible geospatial environment that will provide standardized interfaces for accessing and disseminating common spatial information;
• Facilitate information sharing across different B/Ds and eventually other stakeholders;
• Encourage the adoption of common standards to ensure quality, compatibility and interoperability amongst different systems; and
• Make available a wide range of spatial data and analyses to enable potential applications.

The service of CSDI Portal is now available for all government departments and the general public. With rapid expansion of data availability through the CSDI Portal and a steep ramp-up in system utilization, we will continue to enhance the service to support smart application and development by using the spatial data providing by different organizations and government departments which would definitely help bringing smarter living to the community.
